For nearly two decades, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s Community Engagement Classification has recognized postsecondary institutions in the United States for demonstrating their commitment to their broader communities through engaged learning, research, and partnership practice. Now, a new initiative will bring the classification to a group of Canadian institutions.
McMaster University, Saskatchewan Indian Institute of Technologies, Simon Fraser University and the Université de Montréal are the signers of the joint venture agreement to serve as inaugural hosts for the Canadian Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement. In the near term, the work of this Joint Venture of Canadian Postsecondary Institutions and its management team will be as follows:
To establish a distributed administrative and research home to support Canadian operations;
To establish a Canadian Carnegie steering committee to provide strategic and policy guidance to operations;
To launch a first cycle of the Canadian Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement; and
To establish a Canadian Carnegie review panel to review and determine the classification status of applicant institutions.
