Vancouver Island University (VIU) is making an invaluable contribution to much stronger and healthier communities and a better world. Students experience hands-on learning, individual attention, and many opportunities for undergraduate research. Reciprocal community support and involvement have been constant since the institution's beginnings and are what has enabled VIU to grow into the successful, innovative, community-based and internationally-reaching educational institution it is today. VIU's Regional Initiatives Fund has enabled collaborative applied research on community planning with Indigenous and non-Indigenous partners, air and water quality, affordable housing, fish health and habitat, marmots, tourism, impacts of COVID-19, and more. And VIU’s UNESCO-designated Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region Research Institute, is dedicated to community engagement, relationship building and knowledge sharing by working on projects across Vancouver Island.
